Word count vs character count

A word count treats groups of letters or numbers separated by whitespace as words in many common tools. Character count measures individual characters, usually including spaces unless a tool explicitly offers a no-spaces option.

Why results can differ

Different applications may treat punctuation, line breaks, symbols and unusual whitespace differently. If a form gives you a specific counting rule, use that rule rather than assuming every counter behaves identically.

Paste your final text into a counter after editing is finished. Check words, characters and paragraphs together. If you are working to a strict limit, leave a small buffer instead of submitting exactly at the maximum.
