Why image dimensions matter

A large photo may look excellent on a desktop but waste bandwidth when displayed as a small card. Resizing changes the pixel dimensions so the file better matches its intended display area. It is different from simply changing the quality setting.

Choose dimensions before resizing

Start with where the image will appear. A website hero, product thumbnail and profile image normally need different proportions. If the destination has a fixed aspect ratio, crop first or use a matching ratio to avoid unexpected stretching.

Keep the image proportional

When the original ratio should be preserved, calculate the new width and height from the same scale factor. This prevents faces, logos and other objects from looking distorted.

Check the result

After resizing, inspect text, edges and fine details at normal viewing size. If the image became soft, try a larger target dimension or a suitable source image. For web use, also check the resulting file size and format.

When a browser-based resizer helps

A local browser workflow is convenient when you need a quick dimension change without building an image-editing workflow. For a simple resize, use the SmartToolz Image Resizer.

Quick checklist

  • Know the target display area.
  • Keep the aspect ratio unless intentional cropping is required.
  • Review sharpness after resizing.
  • Use a sensible output format and file size.
